Øystein Aarseth

Øystein Aarseth, better known by his stage name Euronymous, was a Norwegian musician and a pivotal figure in the black metal genre. Born on February 22, 1968, he was the guitarist and founding member of the influential band Mayhem, which played a crucial role in shaping the early Norwegian black metal scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Euronymous is noted for his aggressive guitar work and his creation of a distinctive sound characterized by raw production and dark, atmospheric elements. Notable works include Mayhem's seminal album "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas," released posthumously in 1994, which is widely regarded as a cornerstone of black metal. Beyond his music, Euronymous is infamous for his involvement in the controversial events surrounding the black metal scene, including church burnings and the murder of fellow musician Varg Vikernes. His death in 1993, at the age of 25, cemented his legacy as a martyr within the black metal community. Euronymous's influence extends beyond his music; he helped shape the aesthetics and philosophy of the genre, making him a significant figure in metal history.
